Why's it called a melanzana in Italian? Apparently the English/French word for it, aubergine, is a bastardization of the arabic al-bāḏinjān (similar to the english word for booze, al-kohol!)

@LaStampa, the prefix “melo” was used to indicate that the fruit comes from far, so the Arab “badingian” became “melobadingian” then contracted to “melanzana”. But I’m suspicious, because “melograno” and “melocotogna” have the “mel-“ which means apple, so

(Also, as far as I remembet, telo- is the prefix used for “far”, as in telegram, and melo- is music or singing. But I am definitely not an expert at all on the subject, not at all.)
