Temporal range = range of time a species exists. According to paleontologists, "modern humans" have been around for ~250,000 years. Dinosaurs = 245m years ago - 65m years ago Alpacas = 40m years ago - ? Elephants = 2.5m years ago - ? Humans = 250,000 years ago - ??????

Haha, this one is a bit bleak. My answer is ∞ Doesn't 250k years with alpacas being around for 40 million years seem a bit short?

No idea if this is true or not but it seems reasonable. Animals apparently have a sense of time, so, trivially, no it does not if those animals survive.

Excellent pt. We tend to view the end of humanity as the "end of the world," when "life" will most likely continue Complex species (eg. humans) generally have shorter temporal ranges than simple organisms (reptiles). Learned this all here - great ep:https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/anthropocene-reviewed/episodes/anthropocene-reviewed-humanitys-temporal-range …

I agree with you. We've gotten past the hard part. Decent chance that we'll see a nuke go off in our lifetimes in a city or something, but I don't think we're hardcoded for nuclear war. We want to see the species survive. I worry about global warming but we can always go north.

What freaks me out most is some sort of weird sun volatility or death by cosmic rays. That'd just finish us overnight. Nothing we can do about that. Big believer on us needing to go multiplanetary. I mean...why the fuck not? What else are we gonna do as a species.

Now death by cosmic rays would be the REAl black swan of 2020 :)
