I'm pretty skeptical that there are vertebrates that live 200+ years. All the longest living giant galapagos tortoises conk at ~150 years old and they all have very shady origin stories for how they got to the zoo.pic.twitter.com/eeFbEGpfVi

Is there a more scientific way to determine a living specimen age other than historical bookkeeping? Something more analogous to carbon dating?
Yes, in that screenshot actually you see that they did something like that with the eye of the shark. There could be some peculiarities about the eyes of those animals though that would prevent this from being accurate.
Yeah the issue with radiocarbon dating is that it works at a much cruder scale (hence the error range) that's why I'm curious if there's anything else (like rings for trees).
Yeah... and the have cartilage instead of bones...
Why they use the eye? Seems spurious.
That should bepic.twitter.com/hU1UEZcrOJ
Wouldn't be surprised if they haven't done too many studies on this on sharks...and even if they have its not like they could verify their data haha.
Totally. But that's science and why they always need to get more funding. A theory that gets in use for a while until a better one comes around.
