My guess would be in right to work states you have an option and otherwise it’s mandatory. In NY there are 35k members of just the Police and Sergeants unions out of 38k officers, and I think there are 6 other unions Lieutenants, Captains, etc. 35k probably also includes retirees
Looks like Silicon Valley Twitter has decided the solution is to ban police unions. Does anyone know if police unions are right-to-work? In other words, as a police officer do I have the right as a police officer to not join? It may vary by state.

Confirmed. NYPD have to be part of the Union. NY public school teachers also required
