Worth noting that the person who made this (what I would consider) pretty bad logical error is also behind this celebrated list of research based solutions to police violence.https://twitter.com/samswey/status/1180655701271732224 …

I haven't looked at this study, but I've been on the planet 33 years. From that time I know two things: 1) A lot of studies are total garbage 2) There is no way in hell that body cams don't reduce police violence or at least change behavior.https://twitter.com/samswey/status/1180655705159811073 …

Samuel SinyangweVerified account @samsweyLesson 1. Everything you’ve probably heard is a lie. Specifically, the most discussed “solutions” to police violence have no evidence of effectiveness. For example, Body cams don’t reduce police violence: https://www.pnas.org/content/116/21/10329.short?rss=1 …Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -

If you call someone a bullshitter your counter argument should be better than "i didn't read it but i think it's garbage".

First, you're misrepresenting what I said. I didn't call him a bullshitter. Second, you're oversimplifying my argument. My argument is much more akin to, I have 33 years of experience telling me the conclusions of this study are false. Check this:https://twitter.com/DellAnnaLuca/status/1268556541948391424 …

re 1: I take it back, apologies. re 2: This is very similar to what those campus kids we like to mock do: my experiences invalidate our studies. Life experiences cannot refute a studies unless the conclusions are so strong and categorical that a single counterpoint is enough.

>2 Disagree. See Taleb's "grandmother wisdom" argument. I've been in business for over 10 years, profitable for last 7, 2 companies. Oversight changes behavior hires and vendors. I've basically run that study over and over and over again. Maybe I'm wrong, but...nah I'm not.

You might be right, i have reservations about that study too. But proof should be stronger since you are pro-action and the study is non-action (grandmother argument usually applies in reverse situation).

Fair, but...given what's going on in our country, non-action seems a bit more dangerous that action, especially when considering the downside (cost and charging the cameras) to require body cameras.

Also, forgot to respond to your 1 a few tweets back. No worries. I am clearing dissing the guy. I don't think he's a bullshitter. I think he's just not thinking everything through and is biased, something we all suffer from.

Yeah it's especially hard to be rational and unbiased in times like these. re: bodycams: BTW some police departments simply refuse to hand over the videos which would explain a lot IMO.https://www.rcfp.org/bodycam-video-access/ …

Yeah...that would defeat the purpose. Any locality that cares enough can fix this through voting though. I'm...not optimistic.
