Temporal range = range of time a species exists. According to paleontologists, "modern humans" have been around for ~250,000 years. Dinosaurs = 245m years ago - 65m years ago Alpacas = 40m years ago - ? Elephants = 2.5m years ago - ? Humans = 250,000 years ago - ??????

We tend to view the end of humanity as the "end of the world," when "life" will most likely continue Complex species (eg. humans) generally have shorter temporal ranges than simple organisms (reptiles).
