A good criterion for whether or not you should write and publish an article is: “Am I uniquely qualified to write this piece and is this something that people need to hear.”

Rare is the journalist that answers “no” to either of those questions upon further self-reflection.

I was writing as a hobbyist.

I would venture to reason, that most hobbyists write about the topics that interest them. Consequently, they probably have more personal experience, or above average knowledge, in those areas. Therefore, a hobbyist is perhaps less inclined to write on topics beyond their purview.
