Woke up thinking about this mental model: - Beginners are learning the rules - Intermediates think they know the rules (but don’t) - Experts know all the rules - Masters know when to break the rules I haven’t found a better one to define where one is in learning a subject.

What about the ability to teach the “rules”. Might that be a level higher/equal to masters? Although, I’m not entirely clear on your abstraction “rules”.

I like that idea — On teaching - I think that’s a good litmus test but I know masters who can’t explain a thing! Maybe this model is conflating rules and principles, which

Don't know. Complicated subject. Intermediates are also learning the rules better or how the rules can be combined and multiply, but again the way you put it sound so much better and carries 95%+ of the freight. It's good the way it is.
