Your customers are focused on you vs the competition so not looking at the competition is like burying your head in the sand. What this quote is trying to say is don’t copy your competitors, offer things your customers don’t know they want. But it comes out wrong.

Yes. I'd add that in the cost-center/non-strategic aspects of the business, copying is often really good if you see/hear about a competitor doing something smart.

The way I feel is any book I would write right now would be better in 10 years with 10 years of additional clarification and wisdom.
