Protectionism is always good for the industry being protected. It’s the rest of the economy and normal people paying higher prices who get screwed.

Do you think it would be a shame if Tesla made its cars in Mexico and China instead of the United States? Or would that be better because they’d be cheaper?

Do you think it would be better if they were made in Texas instead of California? I don’t really care, I think governments shouldn’t determine it or impose taxes on their people in order to determine it

I’m mostly indifferent but I strongly prefer the cars be made in USA than China/mex

What if Mexicans are being paid to build them in California?

I’d prefer Americans, including Americans of Mexican descent, to do it. We have enough labor to manufacture cars.

If the car cost 10% more and was made in America, some people would choose to buy that. If it cost 100% more, probably almost no one would. I don’t know where the tariff should be set, and wherever it is set will create deadweight loss for the economy as a whole.

I think the situation is more complex than the macroeconomic equations make it seem.

Sure, covid makes that clear. Especially given intervention of other countries, you have to be more nuanced than blanket free trade.

Replying to @davidgshort @Molson_Hart and
I actually saw this debate live and voted for the guy supporting incremental tariff reduction in a tit for tat format rather than blanket removalshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/should-u-s-unilaterally-abolish-all-tariffs-duties/id1485021246?i=1000454923867 …
