Protectionism is always good for the industry being protected. It’s the rest of the economy and normal people paying higher prices who get screwed.

Do you think it would be a shame if Tesla made its cars in Mexico and China instead of the United States? Or would that be better because they’d be cheaper?

Do you think it would be better if they were made in Texas instead of California? I don’t really care, I think governments shouldn’t determine it or impose taxes on their people in order to determine it

I’m mostly indifferent but I strongly prefer the cars be made in USA than China/mex

What if Mexicans are being paid to build them in California?

I’d prefer Americans, including Americans of Mexican descent, to do it. We have enough labor to manufacture cars.

My point is generally that I don’t know what the negative consequences will be aside from higher prices. I think government having the power to pick who has to compete with global markets is generally going to be worse than not having that power.

If we don’t get protectionism, we can see what happens. I think we’ll get it, but if we don’t the USA will be relegated to Russia status in global affairs. China will be #1
