I'm not exactly sure what you're arguing. Up to the 1950s the US produced 80% of all cars in the world. We now produce <15%. Worth noting that Americans aren't driving cars much anymore. 70% of sales are SUVs last I looked.

Talking about US/Japanese auto companies always gets stupid. When "Japanese" cars are built in Tennessee, but "US" cars are built in Mexico or Ontario.
