What is the worst business that you know that had super-high gross margins (let’s say above 75%)?

Many of the patent holding/enforcement co's ended up being a total disasters while showing super high gross margins along the way.
Was that because they had early low cost successes followed by massive high cost failures?

I think it was something like that - enormously escalating legal costs in conjunction with a lower win rate. However, I am not an expert.
