This whole thread seems like a lie or an expression of outrage combined with extremely poor research. The nearest house to the SpaceX launch center is 5 miles away. https://www.google.com/maps/search/space+x/@26.0179584,-97.2065916,13786m/data=!3m1!1e3 … https://twitter.com/rachmonroe/status/1263496188982112256 …pic.twitter.com/68HYpEubmO

The nature reserve is a swamp. Boca Chica is used for launching rockets because it is southernmost point of Texas. Locations closer to the equator are farther from the center of the earth and thus have lower gravity, making rocket launches less expensive. https://twitter.com/rachmonroe/status/1263496723323924487 …pic.twitter.com/BqfWlHjL5d

Is this really the main driver behind launch site location? I know that gravity is slightly less at the equator due to centrifugal force, certeris paribus, but is it really that meaningful from a economic perspective? I’m genuinely curious. @rocket_jenross

      1. Cheap land 2. Low-regulation state 3. Southern point of launch 4. Low salaries IMHO

I would have guessed that annual weather conditions would play a big role in site selection. It can’t be cheap to build up for a launch only to have to scrub it due to weather. Or have a climate that varies greatly in temperature, humidity, etc throughout the year.

I think all launch sites need to be near the sea and the sea always moderates temps?

The Russian cosmodromes and the Chinese spaceports are all located way inland, AFAIK. Primarily in arid regions.

Ah good point - I guess what I should've said is that it is very helpful to be near a big body of water as, when your rockets crash, it doesn't cause much harm. Thanks for the correction.

There are many factors and this isn’t for any particular provider. Launch window is probably the biggest constraint so multiple locations give you multiple opportunities. Location gives you a particular set of orbit availability. Go Cape for equatorial & VAFB for Polar.

FAA has rules about explosion probabilities so no humans in georgraphic area. Plus NOTAM sends shut out notices to flights & ships so avoid super busy area. Don’t want to fly over contested areas during launch. Need ability to get rocket & payload to site so waterways help
