I’m not in the book space (I do consumer product ecom and law stuff). What does a book publisher do in the amazon ecom post Barnes and noble era to ensure success?

It is my understanding (but I always only self-published, so what I say might be wrong) that you also get editorial services and, sometimes, blurbs / review service. Also, an author can command non-trivial advances only if he’s already successful.
