Molson Hart added,
Genders are perceived as a social problem in English, but not in gendered languages such as French and Italian, in which unless a title is used to qualify a specific person, the title itself defaults to a dictionary-defined gender, and everyone's okay with it. Overton, I guess?
Too esoteric to be outside the window. I didn't know that about gendered languages. That's pretty interesting. I just looked up French cheeses hoping to learn that "la brie" would complain about earning less than "le roquefort" only to learn all cheese is masculin(e).
Not at all La tomme de Savoie La boulette d’Avesnes ...
Is the below screenshot wrong or is it generally true and the cheeses you mentioned are rare exceptions? I’ve never heard of either and I don’t know any cheeses that are in that format, la + noun + de + location.pic.twitter.com/YE4NSWxJNu
Perhaps it’s that Brie is a proper name, whereas Tomme and Boulette indirectly refer to items which are dictionary entries and gendered. Eg: “the nugget of Parmesan”, nugget is the word determining the gender, not Parmesan. Just an hypothesis.
Yes but tomme only refers to cheese. You have tome de Savoie and tomme de brebis the same way you have camembert de Normandie or camembert de chèvre.
Haha yeah, I knew what boulette meant, but I tried google translating "tomme" and got:pic.twitter.com/2Iqr62PB3O
