I share this observation. Besides typing ability (many never 'taught' and use the two index finger method), I think the mediums they used to communicate in their heyday had more friction (handwritten letters, typewriters, etc.), which encouraged being economical / precise.

Yeah I know dudes who are worth mountains of money who two finger type. My dad, who would be a lot older, stuck with two-finger type writer until I turned about 10, and then he would dictate letters for me to type.

IMHO both, the latter being the bottleneck. I naively attribute it to "having seen a lot and noticed that adding more words seldom gets a better result", but I cannot say with confidence that it's the real cause.
