I find it really amusing when people call Elon a total fraud. Okay, he pushes the envelope sometimes with his projections and tactics, but when was the last time you saw Elisabeth Holmes, Bernie Madoff, or Bernard Ebbers do something like this? Land a reusable rocket?https://twitter.com/cowboyInNY/status/1259108718429569024 …

I have some questions: 1. We can't get high speed internet everywhere because of the difficulty of building enough wireless towers (which need fiber optic cables wired to them?) in certain areas 2. Why don't normal directv satellites work? Why do these?https://www.starlink.com/

Has to do with the speed of light and the rotation of the earth. If you want a satellite to stay fixed over a point, it has to be really far out. Far out -> lag due to speed of light. https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Transportation/Types_of_orbits …

Hub airports was my favorite from the last podcast fwiw. So the idea is that we'll have so many of these everywhere all the earth will be covered? Because starlink is low orbit. I'm surprised that the speed of light isn't fast enough to hit a far-orbit satellite!

Cool! Yeah, it’s not that much (few hundred ms round trip) but it’s enough to make your phone call or web interaction total crap. (I spent a couple hours reading about all this at one point as I had the same question!)

Super fascinating! Pssshhh a better solution would be just find a method of transmission that was faster than the speed of light. /sarcasm

Pesky physics. Almost as bad as pesky customers — always wanting something better. ;-)

I don't complain about customers because 99%+ of the time they are totally right and even if they're wrong there's a seed of truth there, but damn did I have a PIA one yesterday. I bring this up because we launched a blue ocean idea that worked :)
