The #1 recommendation to master email (rather than it owning you) is aggressive "time-shifting" of messages. Every email either gets (a) snoozed, (b) acted upon, or (c) deleted. A sure path to inbox zero for me. MixMax does great at this. There are other tools, too.

That doesn't work for me, but may for other jobs. I think it works for some -- just like checking twitter once a day works for some.

Email for many is part of a real-time business process flow so if they only checked email once per day then their work stops. While email isn't the ideal workflow tool it is universally compatible and everyone is already trained on it, so by default what you know is the solution.
