How do airlines and cruise ships fit into this thesis?

Good counterpoint. I still think it’s a reasonably good rule of thumb. We could modify my comment slightly to exclude them and keep the rest. Lawyer on retainer, software getting a year in advance, or insurance feel different from airplane leaves on may 1 and returns may 7.

Any an example, please?

Lawyers, software are two that come to mind. Lawyers get retainer fees. Software companies always get paid before the services are done. Sometimes for as much as a year. Contrast that with the sale of inventory, which is paid at least 30 days after it is received.

The opposite is when you have to do 5 free PoCs to get one paying contract.
