Is a poorly structured media industry the root of the problem? Or something else? Advertising driven media wants eyeballs, not progress. FWIW- My twitter feed showed me all these “real” issues you mentioned. Why I prefer Twitter over conventional media these days.

Hope so. Donors are not radically different than advertisers. And lots of content is currency. Hard to get a lot published AND do tons of really critical thinking. Especially in confusing times with lots of conflicting info. Easier to fall into political narratives.

I'm impressed with the (gradual) shift to the Stratechery model (d2c + subscriptions). Matt Tabibi (Rolling Stone) just started down that path. With one good/trusted reporter & no middlemen, maybe it'll help. It doesn't take much to live a nice living in that model.

If you, as a reporter/journalist/whatever, have a brand and pair it with a little bit of social media, you can definitely make good money doing those D2C journalist/newsletter models. That said, few of these types, have brands so...tough way to make a living, generally speaking.
