Amazon engages in tons of anticompetitive behavior. The media focus on their private label division feels like an Amazon plot to distract the nation from the worse things they do. Feels analogous to how they perpetuate the myth that their retail biz loses money.

Oh my god, Amazon looked at sales data to see what products they should launch for their private label division? And they sold those products anti-competitively low prices? The horror!

The real scandal is in product safety and intellectual property. That's where Amazon should get fucked.

I forgot about pricing. Their most-favored nation pricing policies are really not cool.

Is Amazon still the best option today for a consumer product startup?

Probably, yes. You can do both DTC web and Amazon and be somewhat hedged. There's a lot of nuance here. In the long-run if Amazon accounts for more than 50% of your revenue (like it does for me) that's not a good thing. Check out this analysis of Shop vs. Amazonpic.twitter.com/VvYTXd9qNn

P.S. Shopify is doing lots and lots and lots of smart things to bridge this gap, but Amazon is still a wayyyyy better business. - Shop is opening a marketplace - Shop is doing a single login for all shop stores - Shop is **TRYING** to do fulfillment

Sorry - you got me going. Another big advantage. Amazon has advertising! It literally has the world's best business model (google) baked into it. Pure profit, drops straight to bottom line.
