Altogether not too surprising. When the Soviet Union was growing fast it had a lot of supporters amongst Western academics and journalists. I expect it to be the same with China.

The key difference is that the universities and some professors are on "China"'s payroll whereas I don't think the USSR was doing that.

Some were (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Duranty …) but probably not to the same extent as contemporary universities/professors, you're right.
