The job makes it very difficult for them to achieve mastery in any subject besides journalism (makes sense right?). Kind of like you analyzed in that app tweet, there is no incentive for them to dig down deep and get it perfectly right.
News or no news, the NYT has the same number of pages. If they achieved mastery in any subject, they would leave journalism because more often than not that subject would be way more lucrative than their career as a journalist. Are there smart journalists? For sure, but when

you are jumping from topic to topic all the time it's really hard to get those topics right. Plus, I'd argue that, in general non-verbal (math and maybe spatial) skills are a industry wide issue.
