What can a CEO do to maximize team member engagement during this time? What was easy then is hard now -- you have the entire benefit of being in an office together gone plus this is a trying time. Some thoughts: 1/x

There are three categories of activities I see CEOs doing: 1st: Make sure you have good managerial hygiene. Be doing regular meetings like standups, weekly team meetings, 1-1s, etc. Those are pretty easy -- if you're a good manager you've been doing that stuff already. 2/x

2nd: Group social events. One co I know gave everyone a budget to go out and "shop local" for lunch food. Then they got together to eat together over zoom. Another one is sending care packages to homes. Another Co sent cookies to everyone and the results were great. 3/x

3rd: CEOs need to "lean-in" more. Ex: A great CEO I know is just calling employees up to check on them. This is beyond his direct reports to everyone top to bottom in the company. Does 2/day. It's can replace the fact the stable presence of the CEO isn't seen with remote. 4/x

This is a really tough time for people. Treating them as human-beings is essential -- that's the common thread here. These little things can hold a company together and be ready to prosper as conditions improve. /fin

My employees would probably roll their eyes at this, but you've got to be willing to do anything you're asking them to do. Got a warehouse? Go to the warehouse and put in some work. Have a convenience store? Mask up and work it. General needs to visit the frontlines.

Amping up the cadence of status meetings and mandatory fun would strike me as "the beatings will continue until morale improves"

Fair point! The "mandatory fun" ideas is optional -- and usually most appreciated by the extroverts in the company as you can imagine!

It's a judgment call for every company and depends a lot on the type of company you run, but you gotta do this, just not too often. Calls are definitely a good call, but not every day obviously.

That's a great point. These lunch-togethers are once a month for this particular company.
