Yes, I was astonished to learn that GDP per capita the UK is lower than any US state except Mississippi. I think Europe seems richer than it is because the things they do spend money on, like roads, tend to be visible.

Oil and (FAAG) software power our overall economy without necessarily making the common people’s lives better. Gdp per capita is obviously an insufficient stat for determining societal wealth when you look at the Middle East (high gdp/capita).

Yeah I know but with PPP it might not even be true. Nominal GDP per capita is low in UK/EU mainly because of floating currencies. You don't need any kind of explanation.

Gdp/capita ppp Uk is 48k. 67k for USA. Mississippi is probably around 50% Usa average. So it looks like UK > MI. I’m not sure I see much of a point of looking at these stats. Never been to Mississippi but I’ve been to places like rural Arkansas etc Europe at least seems better.
