DOES JUST IN TIME (JIT) BRING FRAGILITY? JIT brings fragility if paired to an empty warehouse (no redundancy). JIT brings antifragility for it allows problems to surface so that they're addressed before it's too late. (thread, 1/N)

2/ Just In Time (JIT) is usually explained as the idea that the truck with components arrives at the factory just at the moment in which components are needed, so that they don't have to be stored in a warehouse, which is a waste in handling time & storage costs & immob capital

3/ IMHO, it's misleading Just In Time works because it surfaces problems so that they are addressed before it's too late (antifragility) If you have JIT & a truck arrives late, you will make damn sure that the next time the truck arrives in time. Strengthening the supply chain

4/ A stocked warehouse and Just In Time aren't opposite ends of a spectrum; they're separate axes You can have a stocked warehouse and have rules that it always has be at a given level every day Getting the best of both: - redundancy from warehouses - antifragility from JIT

Some interesting thoughts on this subject: 1. For the most part, JIT is RIP in USA 2. A warehouse full of stock is also “anti fragile”. Redundancy is too. 3. JIT for you usually means inventory stockpile for your supplier and, without market power, high prices for you.

4. In my own business, I’ve come to learn that the usefulness of JIT is highly dependent on the cost of that inventory relative to the profit it generates. The higher that ratio, the more you need JIT. The lower, the more you should avoid JIT because JIT is fragile when it fails.
