We're seeing anti-Chinese sentiment throughout the world in response to the virus. That's wrong. The people are not their government (which may not even deserve blame). I'm much more worried about anti-foreign sentiment in China. It's getting bad.

No. I am less worried about anti USA sentiment in China. Have you seen any LaoWai yelled at or punched up in China? Some Americans really took actions on Chinese here

Visited Guangzhou last year with (Chinese American) girlfriend and her family to stay in a local hotel. I didn’t know it at the time but they first refused to allow us to stay there because I was white. Her local uncle convinced them otherwise. Non-Chinese racism is widespread.

And that’s mild, BEFORE this shitstorm. The anti-western sentiment is going to get way worse in China.

That's most likely not what it was. Only some hotels are allowed to have foreigners because all Chinese hotels track the movement of foreigners. You were staying at a smaller hotel I bet and your father-in-law just bribed'em or something.

Most likely (he’s well to do)! The “lobby” was on the ~16th floor. Ground floor was residences. It felt like an Airbnb with a mid-level lobby.

Yeah that's a hotel that doesn't ahve the right to keep foreigners. Not racism, just a xenophobic law.
