We extended an above-market 3 day a week part-time job offer to someone we were hoping could help us in the warehouse. Despite being out of work, they turned it down because their husband is getting $950/week on unemployment and they believe a $3400 stimulus check is on the way.

1. Most Americans don't see the gravity of our economic situation 2. Americans don't save or plan for the future 3. Those checks might get spent awfully fast What a world.

I don't think so. I think the $600 is designed to help our economy and soften the blow.

Think if you read about the negotiation, the $600 was Dems attempt to get unemployment to parity with working... Basically, undoing the normal incentive structure for unemployment (the one that's supposed to push you back to work). I agree that it's already causing problems.

Ah, I see what you were saying now. Yeah, definitely not a good call by whoever was pushing for that. Turns out that if you pay people not to work, they won't work. Who could've guess that!

There will be a problem when ppp loans come through. If you laid off staff, you need to hire them back to get loan forgiveness. But, if you were paying them under like $50k, it's better for them to stay unemployed. So small biz will have to raise wages to get people back.

I don't believe this will be a big issue. The June 30 date will be moved to be coordinated with when business can turn lights back on. And when business can turn lights back on, the bonus level unemployment payment will soon stop. So choice is stay unemployed or get old job back

Sounds like a lot of complications for our government to navigate through competently.

Well, for sure, but you also have to believe that people prefer not to work and that they don't factor in that the $600 extra is short term.
