This sort of surprised me -- U.S. imports from China in the HS category that includes ventilators (and other respiratory machines, including oxygen machines) haven't been significantly impacted by the trade war. 1/xpic.twitter.com/4RbMLZ4nG6

Imports from all sources were actually rising in HS 9019 and 9020 (9019 is a bit broader than ideal, it includes some non respiratory related equipment) 2/xpic.twitter.com/MgNSZmNXm3
There is a contrast between imports of 9018 to 9020 (9019 includes some additional medical and surgical instruments) were imports from China have continued to rise and say non-auto related engines (in the 8407-8409 category) where there is an obvious trade war impact. 3/xpic.twitter.com/bohXH3wMyy
Am sure a more detailed analysis would produce more insight into what is going on, but on first glance I didn't find what I expected ...
and looking at Chad Bown's data more closely it seems two other things are true -- ventilators weren't tariffed and the 7.5% list (most PPE) didn't have much of an impact total imports of medical equipt from China are up 19 v 17, and so are imports from the RoW (more so)
Hmm...healthcare is a weird industry. Maybe the buyers are not price sensitive.
last round of tariffs (15 to 7.5) only in q4 more or less, and more or less offset by CNY moves since 17 ... seems fairly easy to explain within standard non healthcare econ (tho healthcare is strange)
We bought a product that had the same tariff profile. Wasn’t worth the trouble of finding another source.
