I think he means the latter. Either way, the level of distrust is appalling. They have nothing to gain by lying about either case, but for some reason, the person thinks that they're lying. Where's the love, people? Where is the benefit of the doubt? Where's the beef

Yeah. That having it was faked. A ploy by government to keep people calm - “look, Tom Hanks/kevin Durant/prince Charles is fine”. Not saying this is definitely the case, just saying the possibility crossed my mind.

The USA has a culture of distrust of the government. However, spreading speculation as if it were fact is dangerous. Do you have any evidence for your claim?
