Is there a word for these "PC bubbles" we're in? A small minority decides X is now offensive. 98% people disagree but don't have will/desire to fight minority. Small minority dogpiles onto people who say X, giving them a terrible time. People see that and stop saying X.
Overton window narrows. Small minority moves to Y and cycle repeats. I think this can be extended to more than just "political correctness" - it's a unique affliction of social media that can manifest itself as increasing patriotism (this is happening in China).
I'm pretty sure this all ends in a huge pop. The masses will get sick and tired of not being able to say anything about anything.

I thought it was relatively new until recently but Peter Lynch was joking about it back in 1994, and Thiel in the late 90s. Or Maher's Politically Incorrect. Or even Orwell's thought police? The bubble has been inflating for a long time.
I hope it pops. Seems increasingly unlikely though.
