I feel like I've seen a 100 articles about how important China's market is to Apple. This is sale of hardware and China is almost less than 1/3rd of the Americas for them.

Yeah but Apple has been defying that for decades. I know what you mean (network effects) but by that logic android is dead in the USA because it has 41% market share to apple’s 50%+
There are a lot things going on in China that are unique: 1. Strong anti American national pride 2. Extremely vibrant fast moving iterating phone ecosystem 3. Weak ip protection on stuff Apple uses to sell phones ie music 4. App Store are less important, same as 3
