On the JRE podcast, Michael Osterholm said that a vaccine within a year was wishful thinking. It takes a long time to ensure that the vaccine: 1. doesn't harm 2. doesn't cause contagiousness 3. works It's easy to make a potential vaccine, hard to make one that works.
Didn't know that Fauci said that - cool. There are certainly reasons to not be certain that a vaccine is possible. We've had HIV for a while now for example.

When there's a known unknown, we'll be in much better shape. Unknown unknown is the scary place we are now, sadly.

So if hiv is a virus and the coronavirus is a new virus (which as a family group has no vaccines) how could we be so sure that we can get a vaccine for it? No vaccine for sars or mers.
