(Not nitpicking, IMHO) I don't think so. I was a math major at your alma mater (!) so I don't have innumeracy and it trained me to seek out inaccuracies in all statements. It's not innumeracy, it's an autistic-like lack of empathy and lawyer/philosophical understanding.
There are so few statements outside of the realm of math one can make that do not have exceptions. Most commenters on Twitter just want to be noticed by guys like you and people who follow you and a 
doesn't do the job, so there are some social dynamics encouraging nitpicking
