Hello from South Korea. It took about a week-and-a-half to get the coronavirus under control with large-scale testing, closing schools, wearing masks, etc. Why are the experts so confident that this can't be contained?

Imho, you can do Singapore level contact tracing but it’s only a matter of time, if you don’t do permanent quarantine, that you get another shincheonji church super spread event. In summary, to maintain containment you need to: 1. Block all travelers 2. Maintain Singapore level

Containment 3. Test like crazy 4. Stay in semi quarantine (social distancing) 5. Not get unlucky 6. Not have the entire country go nuts before you get a vaccine

Containment and vigilance. Aggressively contain new breakouts with detailed tracing and quarantines. Delay the spread as much and as often as possible until there is a vaccine. Then hope and pray (if you are into that sort of thing) :-)
