Rule of law and (relatively) free markets are the two most important human-influenced factors in our success. (Having a huge amount of land and resources and only two, relatively weak, neighbors also helped.)

I don't know a ton about what kind of resources Australia has but, excepting its current scale, I think it might be poised for better growth than the United States. Helps to be totally surrounded by water.
