In 1900, not knowing what was coming, it would probably not be unreasonable to think Rhodesia or Kenya or German East Africa might be the best opportunity.

I feel like it would’ve been possible to think that you were “too late” for the us opportunity. When you put too many countries near each other, nothing good happens. Even then it was probably seen as a restive region.
