I just made a list of the biggest mistakes I've made in my life and then attributed each to a root cause. The most common one was failure to step back and not look at the big picture. - Spent 10s of 1000s of hours trying to become a grandmaster of chess.

Was a big waste of time. I could've taken a step back and acknowledged that even if I had done, I'd never be good enough to justify spending more time on it. Was never gonna be Kasparov - Got in a car accident in college in a snow storm. Was with friends. Very scary. Could've

taken a step back and seen that driving fast in those conditions made no sense. - Not going to any classes in college. I was totally unmotivated and was just stuck in a routine. If had taken a step back I would've just dropped out. The diploma didn't do much for me.

      - Spent like 1-2 years living with my mom in my mid-twenties because my business was making hardly any money and I didn't feel worthy of spending money on rent. Stunted my social growth and was just embarrassing as hell. If I had taken a step back I would've seen that and would

have figured out that the small amount of money I was saving on rent was obviously going to be compensated for later even if the business failed. (there's a long list) Some other causes of big mistakes: - Small sample size - Dismissing other options too early in process

      - Not realizing when I was making a huge decision (the original idea for first business was TERRIBLE) - Sunk cost fallacy Very useful exercise! Made me realize that I need to buy a bigger safer car now so I don't die in a car accident.

Flip side... Smaller less safe car so you don’t feel comfortable driving as fast?

Ah, that's a good thought, but my problem (these days) isn't going too fast. It's getting distracted. I love to look at things on the side of the road to my and others' peril. Also you never know when a drunk driver is going to plow through the intersection into you. #Texas
