The whole idea that Facebook is secretly listening to all speech near any smart phone on earth and using it to map ads is a really fascinating meme.

Have you seen 1 real proof? People are always saying that but nobody can prove it while it should be pretty easy to prove it by monitoring the data going out of your phone Ppl are experimenting on Reddit to speak only spanish around a Google Home to see if the ads will be in

Just anecdotal stuff where we talk about something obscure without ever typing it and then boom we see ads for it on our phones.

Still not convinced. Smart speakers have a hard time understanding when you talk directly to them, not sure how FB app could do a better job while listening without context They’ve so many data points we tend to forget.. Have you checked your off-FB data?https://www.facebook.com/off-facebook-activity …

They don’t need to understand and then serve a reasonable response. They just need to identify a noun. “Siri, what channel is Nbatv on direct tv?” And “Siri, does direct tv work on cloudy days” are hard to answer but not hard for Algos to determine what ads to show.

Sorry it's not available yet but on the page they mention the issue "Why do ads feel like they are directed to you, personally?" I really think they dont have much to gain from listening when they have your browsing data via the like buttons, fb, whatsapp, IG, audience partners

I don't get the impression that they're the type of company that stops at "well we've gathered 70% of their knowable data, that should be enough"

I just watched the video. I dunno man. I've definitely seen many times where I've gotten ads delivered to me based alone on things I said, not typed, clicked, etc.
