The whole idea that Facebook is secretly listening to all speech near any smart phone on earth and using it to map ads is a really fascinating meme.
Just anecdotal stuff where we talk about something obscure without ever typing it and then boom we see ads for it on our phones.

Still not convinced. Smart speakers have a hard time understanding when you talk directly to them, not sure how FB app could do a better job while listening without context They’ve so many data points we tend to forget.. Have you checked your off-FB data?https://www.facebook.com/off-facebook-activity …

They don’t need to understand and then serve a reasonable response. They just need to identify a noun. “Siri, what channel is Nbatv on direct tv?” And “Siri, does direct tv work on cloudy days” are hard to answer but not hard for Algos to determine what ads to show.

To actually try this, you’ll have to generate a topic at random to avoid following outside influences. For example roll on this diceware list until you hit something you can talk about: http://world.std.com/~reinhold/diceware.wordlist.asc …

and *then* all involved in the conversation must absolutely avoid investigating the topic anyhow, or having any others they know investigate it. If they can’t avoid that, the info might just be leaked over one of the many known surveillance channels.
