I got an email from China (American on the ground in Hunan province) that the reality is less destructive than SARS. Just the gov't there is doing the usual under-react at the beginning and then over-react once it's bad approach. More akin to a bad flu epidemic, s/he said.

This email said s/he saw it was mostly old people succumbing. Also worth wondering is how much of the SARS data was phony back then.
