We break down reviews along Innovation & Results, Critical Thinking, Team Building & Culture, Communication. I don’t know that this is the right list, but I always have something to say about successes and opportunities across each discipline
I like those categories. I was missing team building & culture, but have since added them.
I originally treated this as pleasant to work with, which is certainly something you can talk about if it’s an issue or especially notable, but this is also about training others, exemplifying those 4 values you espouse, creating documentation others find useful, etc
It's being able to strike that balance between 1. getting shit down 2. giving constructive criticism 3. not losing buy-in from peers Right? I kinda feel like the documentation stuff should mostly come from management as opposed to being organic.
It totally depends on what expectation of the employee is, but that generally makes sense. As a junior PM, my direct report is now owning projects, so that means he needs to document them. Part of team building in my view is making yourself replaceable for anything critical
I think of being replaceable as the unfortunate byproduct of building out good documentation. It lets you remember how to do things months later, helps when you’re out, and improves the accuracy of your work. Yes it also makes it easier to fire and hire.
David Short Retweeted Jeff Weinstein
While replaceable in a hire/fire way also has value, I really just mean able to be covered for too. Makes me think of this tweet I saw a few days agohttps://twitter.com/jeff_weinstein/status/1219078952246923264?s=21 …
David Short added,
Not going to lie, ease of hire/fire is really important. It’s the elephant in the room.
