For people who became rich in the US in the 1950s and 1960, how did they do it? I've been desultorily trying to find data (not anecdotes!) on this for a while but have come up dry, would love pointers if anyone has them
Rise of tv definitely created some millionaires, but I just read Ogilvy’s book and tv was not his bread and butter. Maybe I’m just being a whiny millennial, but with gdp so much higher then, it had to have been easier.

My hypothesis is that all the gains were captured by big companies not by individuals, I just can’t figure out how to test it

For TV, that's true, but I don't think it's true for plastics, imports, real estate, or chain stores (not until later anyways).
