What can Americans do? I suspect many townships in USA pretend to pick up recyclables then dump them into landfills. There is little capacity to process them at local level.
Fascinating and alarming article about recycling in the United States. We used to export our trash to China for sorting and recycling, then they banned foreign garbage. This overwhelmed secondary options who've since restricted garbage imports. @tfadell

Many states do not offer money for bottles and cans. Doing so would be a start. Image recognition robot sorting might be an option. They can burn the stuff to generate electricity.

More complicated than that; government intervention is required as the us has plenty of cheap land compared to other countries and land fills are the cheapest way to dispose of trash.
