Now that it's pretty clear that the Asian nations are not only superior at trade, but more numerous, America's attitude to free trade will change greatly.

Historically they were not popular in the 19th century in northern usa when competing with the British. I think that supports your theory. (Im guessing youre talking about recently)

A big part of the original push for free trade in the past was to force open the China market. The idea that China was an untapped market to sell stuff to was long taken as an axiom, despite nothing but specie and opium ever really being successfully imported there...
