Just today, I’ve heard 2 people who used to be in the Bay Area and moved to NYC that they were surprised at how small the tech scene still was there. Folks take the Bay Area ecosystem for grantd, but once you’ve gotten used to it, everywhere (even NYC!) seems like a no man’s land

Also I think I share this about once a week — including every time someone tells me they’re thinking of moving to NYC, and that “there really starts to be a tech scene there too!” In exit $ over the last 10y, 1 Bay Area > 23 New York Cities https://twitter.com/josephflaherty/status/1161383799193833472?s=21 …https://twitter.com/josephflaherty/status/1161383799193833472 …

The Bay Area has produced the most/biggest startup exits. However, over the last ten years, there's been over a hundred $1B+ tech exits outside of the Valley. @dafrankel and I dug into the "startup geography" data and came away with some surprises: https://medium.com/@foundercollective/startup-success-outside-silicon-valley-data-from-over-200-exits-in-17-cities-1872bf8e7619 … pic.twitter.com/ywu8QZf5HU

Now sure, it’s a trailing indicator. But ecosystems tend to grow stronger over time, not weaker — the burden of proof should be on the Bay Area naysayers to show data making the case for its (relative) decline :)

If you were trying to explain why the Bay Area ecosystem is so strong how would rank its components? 1. Talent 2. Angels 3. Venture Capital 4. Culture 5. Advice It almost feels like it could be twice as expensive and it’d still be the best place to found a billion dollar co.

It’s hard to pull those apart, what’s so special about SV is that these factors reinforce each other. But I have a sweet spot for culture and talent — I think those are the two that started everything

This may sound ridiculous but I think the advantages of San Francisco for big tech companies are analogous to Detroit’s supply chain. A city without any one of them is like trying to build a car without a tire, engine, or windshield supplier. They’re all interconnected and depend
