Mike Bloomberg (paraphrasing): “Tax poor people more regressively to manipulate their lifestyle choices so that they live longer.” Hoo boy.

He’s right. We need a different healthcare system in this country and if taxpayers are paying for the poors healthcare they shouldn’t be allowed to guzzle soda and smoke like a chimney tax free.

But cancer patients put less stress on public healthcare as they avoid the later years of healthcare, which are by far the most costly.

Varies by disease and prognosis. What about diabetics?

Haven't come any specific calculation for diabetics, but given it reduces life expectancy by a significant amount (estimates around 8 years) the odds are that it also costs tax payers less than average. 8 less years of care + avoidance of late care costs.

I’m not sure this is right. Diabetics require constant expensive care I.e. medication, dialysis, amputation etc
