“Smiling nervously” means they were very bad liars. Their novicehood means they don’t usually lie. But I do admit that ripping off laowai is a prevalent Chinese culture. Fluent Mandarin helps tho.

Ripping off laowai is right. Even with good Chinese (not fluent) and obvious knowledge they quote me higher on everything because I’m white.
