I don’t think international law really matters, only whether China would actually be willing and able to project force like that. I don’t think they’re either, in this case. Much less Piraeus Port and others.
I think this debt trap diplomacy thing is American propaganda. The idea that taking a loan to build infrastructure in your country is somehow “bad” is ridiculous. Africa needs to develop and China is stepping up.

I agree, and it’s not like Africans lack agency. There’s certainly a complaint that the infrastructure ends up being less useful for locals than promised, jobs go to Chinese, etc but that’s not unique to China. China also doesn’t get in your face re: environment, etc.

Debt trap diplomacy is bullshit. China can’t run around seizing land in foreign countries because they didn’t pay their debts. I mean sure, they can, but only if the international community, specifically the US, decides to allow it.pic.twitter.com/kJZpA0C5fs
